PIM – What is it?
A Product Information Management (PIM) system is a solution in which product-relevant and marketing-related content can be created and enriched.
A PIM holds channel relevant content for e.g. print or ecommerce and distributes it quickly, efficiently and securely.
PIM should not be confused with an inventory management system. The focus of the information that is enriched in PIM is clearly on the marketing level. An example of this are product descriptions, which are individualised in the channels and whose content has the purpose of making the product “palatable” for the customer.
PIM is generally regarded as the absolute back-end booster for a successful ecommerce business.
PIM – Who needs it?
All companies that actively sell products via different channels (web, print, etc.) will benefit from the use of a PIM system. Less decisive here is the number of products that are distributed. Both companies with a small portfolio and large retail chains will benefit from a PIM. Modern PIM solutions are flexible and easily scalable and therefore valuable and useful even for small businesses.
PIM – What friends does it have?
A PIM is the heart of marketing-related content, so it is a system that both receives content and distributes content. Typical friends of a PIM are:
- DAM (Digital Asset Management) systems
- Ecommerce shop systems
- Merchandise management systems (for transmitting technical data, for example)
- Print systems
